NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE Friday, September 11, 2009 In Partnership with World Boxing Cares Athletes For Hope PROJECT: Guest Speaker - Next Generation Center DESCRIPTION: In partnership with Athletes for Hope & World Boxing Cares, The Children's Aid Society will host a service project in remembrance of September 11th, at the Next Generation Center. As part of this project, 40 participants from our Lasting Investments in Neighborhood Connections (LINC) program will have the opportunity to meet and hear from a number of World Champion boxers about their path towards becoming professional athletes and the lesson learned during this journey. IMPACT: As a mechanism to encourage personal and professional growth, this project will serve to offer participants inspiration and a positive message as they confront, address, and overcome many of the obstacles they are facing on a daily basis. THE AUDIENCE The Children's Aid Society LINC program serves youth who are returning to communities in the Bronx and Manhattan from juvenile justice facilities. A support network aids the difficult transition from juvenile justice facility back into the community. To ease this difficult transition, youth receive customized re-entry plans specified to meet their needs and interests. LINC staff also ensure that all returning youth have the basic documentation (including a photo ID, birth certificate, social security card and working papers) needed to register in school, obtain a job and/or take part in community service.
