INTREPID, Sea, air and Space Musuem
WBC WORLD BOXING CARES
ATHLETES FOR CHARITY
February 18, 2009
Dear Mark,
Thank you so much for agreeing to be a speaker at a Power of One program at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum!
Power of One is based on the notion that a specific moving and inspiring event in a young person's life can start them on a path to positive change. By hearing directly from eminent members of society who experienced, confronted and overcame challenges we hope students will be encouraged to make solid choices on their own and live by the values of respect, drive and responsibility.
You will be speaking on a panel of outstanding Olympic and professional athletes representing a variety of sports including: soccer, gymnastics, fencing, tennis, boxing, martial arts, and luge! Each member of the panel will have an opportunity to speak to students about events in their lives where they faced adversity and obstacles, and were given that extra boost from someone who helped them dig down to find the personal strength needed to redirect, rebuild, or simply not give up! While not set in stone, each member of the panel will have approximately 10 minutes to speak individually, and will then participate in a Q&A session with students. The overall speaking portion of the event typically lasts for about an hour. After the session, students enjoy interactive tours with museum educators.
There are currently two tentative sessions scheduled for 3-27-09, one that begins at 11AM, and another at 3PM. Speakers can enjoy guided tours, lunch, and the opportunity to speak with media in attendance after their engagement or in-between sessions. All guests should arrive at the museum 45 minutes before their start time in order to get situated. Please let me know by 2-27-09 if you are available for morning and/or afternoon sessions, would like a lunch/tour and if you require parking. Below please find a list of confirmed and potential participants, as well as a brief summary the day's schedule. Olympians: Wendy Hilliard: Gymnastics Keeth Smart: Fencing Heather O'Reilly: Soccer Mark Breland: Boxing Cameron Myler: Luge Zina Garrison: Tennis Rusty Kanokogi Martial Arts
Once again, we are thrilled that you have decided to join us in order to help guide and inspire students to take paths that will enable continued growth, or lead them to positive change. Please never hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns.
Warm regards,
Michael Wertz Manger of Leadership and Public Programs
